The Live Labs 2 programme is an ambitious UK innovation programme with a focus on reducing the carbon impacts of infrastructure associated with the enhancement, operation and maintenance of the UK local roads network. In the UK over 80% of local highway authorities have declared a climate emergency and initial estimates suggest the sector produces a million tonnes of CO2 in England alone each year.
With £30m of funding from the Department for Transport over three years, the programme covers local roads in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland with a deep innovation programme covering four thematic areas – a carbon centre of excellence, corridors & places, street lighting and green assets.
Neil Gibson, the Chair of the cross sectoral Commissioning Board that oversees the programme ,will present insights on the programme which is now in its third, final year covering the scope of activities, the approach to measuring carbon, the evaluation process and the behavioural change work that provides the framework for accelerated adoption and change across the UK.
This session is essential for practitioners to learn about experiences from a major innovation programme focused on the wicked problem of decarbonising the very assets upon which we all depend.
