Wollongong City Council is redefining its approach to infrastructure monitoring by moving away from traditional, resource-intensive methods of manual road inspections. These conventional techniques have long been hampered by subjectivity, inconsistencies and the network monitoring has highly relied on public involvement using a highly reactive approach.
By integrating artificial intelligence into its operations, the Council is now able to inspect its road network with unparalleled frequency and efficiency. In collaboration with Retina Visions, the council has deployed smart cameras equipped with computer vision capabilities across its existing waste fleet. This innovative solution automatically identifies and categorises road defects as the waste vehicles traverse the city, transmitting near real-time information to the council's Asset Management System (TechnologyOne).
This AI-driven approach not only streamlines the collection and analysis of critical infrastructure data but also empowers council staff to make faster, more informed decisions about maintenance and repairs. With continuous, automated monitoring, Wollongong City Council can proactively manage road safety and infrastructure performance, ensuring a safer and more efficient urban environment for all.
