Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) has successfully developed a next-generation GIS-based digital planning tool, revolutionizing how the construction and engineering industries access and utilize utility location data. Traditionally, utility planning relied on static PDF reports that required manual interpretation, leading to inefficiencies, outdated data, and increased risks of asset strikes. This new solution integrates Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, providing an interactive mapping platform that enhances accuracy, efficiency, and collaboration.
Through a rigorous Proof of Concept (PoC) in one of Australia’s most complex utility networks—spanning from Sydney’s central business district to the Western Sydney Airport—BYDA tested the platform’s ability to aggregate and display multiple asset types with clarity. The successful implementation demonstrated significant improvements in operational efficiency, reducing the time required for data retrieval and project planning. Engineers and designers can now access up-to-date, validated utility information directly within their workflow, with seamless integration into industry-standard design tools like CAD and BIM.
The PoC also validated key business hypotheses, proving the platform’s ability to scale nationally and establishing a viable subscription-based revenue model for the construction sector. Additionally, the project fostered stronger collaboration between the construction and utility industries by enabling real-time data contributions, improving communication in early-stage project planning, and enhancing safety protocols.
Stakeholder engagement was a critical success factor, with participation from major utilities and construction firms. The findings highlight industry demand for a digital-first approach to utility planning, paving the way for full-scale implementation. This presentation will share key insights from the PoC, including lessons learned, stakeholder feedback, and the strategic roadmap for expanding BYDA’s digital capabilities nationwide. With this innovation, BYDA is positioned as an industry leader in GIS-based asset information management and digital transformation.
