  1. MidCoast Council - TAREE, NSW, TAREE, NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia

This presentation shares a case study of the development of the MidCoast Road Strategy.

The Council sought a strategy that clarified the extent and condition of existing transport infrastructure, identified recent trends and identified the necessary actions to halt the decline in the condition of transport assets. The strategy was also to provide options for lifting the overall condition of the network to a long-term sustainable position.

The resulting strategy provided a wealth of information on the assets that form part of the transport network and great insights into what has been happening in recent history. It gives a broader perspective on the challenges facing the Council and the industry in general. It also provides an analysis of some of the opportunities coming in the future to do more with what we already have.

The case study will share key findings and what we learnt whilst collecting and analysing information, modelling the future conditions and developing the options. It will also look at current and future opportunities to manage the transport network better.

Sustainably managing and maintaining transport infrastructure is a major challenge faced by many Councils. The problem is complex and there is no single solution; there's no magic bullet. Shared knowledge and understanding is critical for both Council & Community to be able to develop the solution that fits within the overall desires of the community, affordability and willingness to pay. This case study details the MidCoast's first major step towards improvement.
